Fortnite Save the World is free to play. Epic switched the mode from a paid purchase to a free download on 16 April 2026, and it now runs on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, cloud services and Nintendo Switch 2 without anyone paying to start.
Free does not mean every account earns the same things. Players who bought the mode in the paid era are called Founders, and Epic says they keep earning V-Bucks from daily quests, while everyone else earns a separate currency called X-Ray Tickets. Below is what each group gets, what the tickets buy, and why the Founder’s Pack is gone for good.
Is Fortnite Save the World Free Now?

Yes. Epic announced the change on 11 March 2026 and the mode went free on 16 April 2026 with update v40.20. There is no pack to buy, no subscription, and no entry fee on any supported platform.
New purchases of Save the World were paused at 8 PM Eastern on 11 March 2026, five weeks before the switch. From that evening the only way to own the mode was to wait for it to become free, which is why nobody has joined the Founder group since.
Free access does not hand out Founder status. A new player on 16 April or later earns the non-Founder rewards described below, and that gap in currency is the one real difference between a free account and an old paid one.
What the Mode Is and Where It Came From
Save the World is the co-op, player-versus-environment side of Fortnite. You build defences around an objective, then hold it against waves of husks, alone or with up to three friends, and the whole map can be knocked down and rebuilt.
It opened as a paid early access release on 25 July 2017, with Founder pre-orders running from 21 July, and left early access on 29 June 2020. Epic’s April 2026 post thanked players for “the last nine years”, which is the span the free launch closed.
Epic lists it as its own mode, separate from Battle Royale and from sibling modes such as LEGO Fortnite, which has a guide of its own in our LEGO Fortnite modes guide.
Platforms That Can Play It

The free launch added Nintendo Switch 2 as a first-ever Nintendo platform for the mode. Epic names PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Cloud and Switch 2 in its announcement, and the cloud route covers three services.
| Platform | Status |
|---|---|
| PC | Supported |
| PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 | Supported |
| Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One | Supported |
| Cloud: Xbox Cloud Gaming, GeForce Now, Amazon Luna | Supported |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Supported, and the first Nintendo console to get the mode |
| Original Nintendo Switch | Not supported |
| Phones and tablets | Not supported |
The original Switch and mobile devices are the gaps. A phone or tablet cannot run the mode natively, so cloud streaming is the only route off a console or PC.
Free Players and Founders Compared Side by Side
Most of the confusion about the mode comes from mixing up two currencies. This table sets the two kinds of account against each other on the questions players ask most.
| Question | Free player | Founder |
|---|---|---|
| Cost to start | Nothing since 16 April 2026 | Already owned the mode |
| Daily currency | X-Ray Tickets | X-Ray Tickets and V-Bucks |
| V-Bucks sources | None | Daily Quests, Mission Alerts, Storm Shield Defense Missions, existing Challenges |
| Can buy X-Ray Llamas in the shop | Yes, with tickets | Yes, with tickets |
| Spend the currency in Battle Royale | No, tickets stay inside Save the World | V-Bucks yes, tickets no |
| Can become a Founder now | No, free access does not grant the status | Already one |
The only row where the groups diverge is V-Bucks. Everything else, including access to missions and the shop, is shared, so a free player is not locked out of any part of the game by lacking Founder status.
How X-Ray Tickets Work and What They Buy
X-Ray Tickets were introduced in update v9.40 on 17 July 2019 as the reward currency for players who were not Founders. They replaced V-Bucks in the Save the World reward tables for that group.
Tickets pay for X-Ray Llamas and other items in the Save the World shop, which Epic renamed the Exchange in the v40.00 progression overhaul. They only work inside the mode. A Founder who holds both currencies spends tickets first and V-Bucks afterwards.
- They stay inside Save the World. Unlike V-Bucks, tickets cannot be spent on Battle Royale cosmetics.
- They come from quests and alerts. Daily Quests and Mission Alerts are the steady sources, and Daily Login Rewards were removed in June 2023.
- The last stated rate is 30 per Daily Quest. That figure comes from the v25.10 patch note of 19 June 2023, so treat it as a dated number rather than a promise about today’s payout.
Why Only Founders Earn V-Bucks
Epic’s April 2026 post says Founders will continue earning V-Bucks through the four activities below, and free players are not listed against any of them.
- Daily Quests
- Mission Alerts
- Storm Shield Defense Missions
- Existing Challenges
The dated figures show why the perk matters. In June 2023 each Daily Quest paid a Founder 30 V-Bucks on top of the 30 tickets and 10 Gold everyone received. At that rate a Founder reaches the 800 V-Bucks that a Battle Pass costs after about 27 daily quests, and the price of a pass is covered in our Battle Pass cost guide.
Founder-earned V-Bucks are ordinary V-Bucks, which is the whole value of the perk. They can be spent in other Fortnite modes, so a Founder who plays a few quests a day is quietly funding cosmetics elsewhere. A free player earns tickets that can never leave the mode.
Can You Still Buy the Founder’s Pack or a Starter Pack?
No. New purchases of the mode were paused on 11 March 2026, and the Founder’s Pack was discontinued back in June 2020, so there is no official way to become a Founder today.
Resale listings do exist, with asking prices in the hundreds of dollars. Epic prohibits account trading, which means a bought account can be taken back or lost, and the seller has no way to prove the account stays yours. Treat every listing as a scam risk.
If you play on an account you care about, switch on two-factor authentication before you put hours into it. A bought account is the one most exposed to a seller who still holds the login details.
How the Currency Rules Changed From 2017 to 2026
Six dates explain why two kinds of account exist side by side. Each row is a change that moved who could earn what.
| Date | Event | What changed for currency |
|---|---|---|
| 25 July 2017 | Paid early access opens, with Founder pre-orders from 21 July | Access is a purchase, and buyers become Founders |
| 17 July 2019 | Update v9.40 | X-Ray Tickets arrive as the reward currency for players who are not Founders |
| 29 June 2020 | Full release, and the Founder’s Pack is discontinued | Founder status becomes a closed group |
| 19 June 2023 | Update v25.10 | Daily Login Rewards are removed; each Daily Quest pays 30 X-Ray Tickets, 30 V-Bucks to Founders and 10 Gold |
| 11 March 2026 | Free-to-play announced, new purchases paused at 8 PM Eastern | Nobody can join the Founder group or buy in any more |
| 16 April 2026 | Update v40.20 | The mode goes free; Founders keep earning V-Bucks |
The pattern is a closing door and an opening one. Founder status closed in 2020 and again in March 2026, while access itself opened in April 2026, so a late arrival gets the whole mode but not the V-Bucks side of it.
What Existing Players and Pre-Registrants Received

Epic thanked current players on 16 April 2026 with a bundle of upgrade items. The gift went to existing players rather than only to Founders, and it was delivered in-game on launch day.
- Three Superchargers: one each for Heroes, Weapons and Traps.
- Five Survivor Superchargers.
- One Hero Recruitment Voucher and one Weapon Research Voucher.
- 10,000 Gold.
Pre-registration rewards scaled with sign-ups and included a Save the World Hero. The Snowstrike Hero, Kyle’s Construction Spray and the Jess Banner were the named items. Update v40.20 also opened a Jess and Penny crossover that ran through 5 June.
Is Save the World Still Being Updated?

Yes. The free launch was not a farewell, and 2026 has been an active year for the mode. Epic has shipped updates numbered v40 through v42 this year, most recently on 15 October.
- v40.00: a progression overhaul that merged Hero and Survivor XP into People XP and renamed the llama tab the Exchange.
- v40.20 on 16 April: the free-to-play launch and a rebuilt Homebase you can walk around.
- v42.10 on 3 September: the Hexsylvania Ventures season, which runs through 18 November.
- v42.40 on 15 October: the Challenge the Rift encounter, a mini-boss fight that pays Gold, PERK-UP! and an Evolution Materials Cache.
A mode that is mid-season with a boss encounter shipped three weeks ago is not in maintenance. The practical advice for a new free player is to start now, because a Venture season in progress gives you a defined goal rather than an open-ended grind.
