LEGO Fortnite Modes: Odyssey, Brick Life and Islands

LEGO Fortnite is a hub of separate experiences. Here is what Odyssey, Brick Life and LEGO Islands do, how they differ, and which one to start with.

LEGO Fortnite Modes title card

LEGO Fortnite is not one game. It is a hub inside Fortnite that holds two separate Epic-made experiences, LEGO Fortnite Odyssey (survival and crafting) and LEGO Fortnite Brick Life (a social life sim), plus a third group of smaller LEGO Islands made by the LEGO Group and by independent creators. All of it is free and runs through the normal Fortnite launcher.

That layout is recent. In December 2023 the name meant a single survival game, and a lot of pages still describe it that way. This guide covers what each mode does, how they compare, what happened to Expeditions, and which one to start with as of 5 November 2026.

Is LEGO Fortnite One Game? How the Hub Is Organised

No. Epic files LEGO Fortnite news under two separate categories, Odyssey and Brick Life, and the LEGO Group describes three broad categories by adding LEGO Islands. Think of the LEGO Fortnite tile in the Discover tab as a shop front rather than a single title.

The split happened in December 2024. On 10 December the original survival game was renamed LEGO Fortnite Odyssey, and two days later, on 12 December, Brick Life opened in a LEGO city called Brick Bay. Before that date, saying LEGO Fortnite and meaning the survival mode was correct. Now the name covers all of them.

Crossover content is not a mode either. NINJAGO, Batman and the Halloween events are updates delivered inside Odyssey, and the Star Wars release on 1 May 2025 reached both Odyssey and Brick Life at once. If a friend says they are playing LEGO Fortnite, ask which one.

LEGO Fortnite Odyssey: The Survival and Crafting Mode

Odyssey is where LEGO Fortnite began. It launched on 7 December 2023 and drew 2.4 million concurrent players at its peak. You land in a procedurally generated world, gather wood and stone, build a village, recruit villagers, craft better gear and push into harder biomes until you can take on the Storm King, a giant raid boss added in December 2024.

Each world holds up to 8 players, and one account can keep up to 8 worlds. You pick a world type when you create it:

  • Survival. The standard rules, with enemies at night and weather that matters.
  • Sandbox. A creative-focused world type for building.
  • Cozy. Added in 2024, with fewer threats and the pressure settings turned down. It is the gentlest way in.
  • Expert. A hard mode with permanent elimination and tougher Storm-Wild enemies.

Worlds are private. Friends join by invitation or with a world key, and they have to be on your Fortnite friends list first. A key holder can keep building while the owner is offline.

The survival rules have loosened since launch. Hunger was removed on 9 October 2025 in update v37.50, so you no longer manage a food meter, and food now gives temporary buffs instead. Crafting-bench upgrades went in 2024 with v30.20. Temperature is still live, so a freezing biome still punishes players who arrive without cold protection. If you are comparing it with other sandboxes, our list of the best open world games puts it in context.

LEGO Fortnite Brick Life: A Social City Instead of Survival

Brick Life launched on 12 December 2024 and shares nothing with Odyssey beyond the LEGO style. There is no crafting grind and no hostile wildlife. You live in Brick Bay, a LEGO city, take jobs to earn in-game money called Creds, buy and decorate a house, buy vehicles and spend time with other players.

It is a public space rather than a private world. At launch a Brick Bay server held 32 players, so it plays more like a hangout than a co-op campaign. Some cosmetics that work elsewhere in Fortnite did not carry over at launch, including pickaxes, contrails, kicks, instruments and back blings.

Activity is the open question. Epic’s dated Brick Life news posts run from April 2025 (a cooking update) through the Palm Paradise LEGO Pass in August 2025 and the Pixelle Starter Pack in September 2025. No major 2026 Brick Life update has appeared, so do not count on fresh content. The LEGO Group has said it has no plans to remove the mode.

LEGO Fortnite Islands: Small Experiences From LEGO and Creators

LEGO Islands are short, focused experiences rather than one big world. They are free, and you find them in Discover or by searching for the creator name thelegogroup. They began arriving a few months after Odyssey launched, and they cover many genres rather than one.

The ones named by the LEGO Group show the range:

  • LEGO Cat Island Adventure, a cozy exploration game
  • LEGO Chasers vs Hunters, an 8v8 team shooter for 16 players
  • LEGO Battle Arena and LEGO Parkour Worlds, built around combat and movement
  • LEGO Monster Fishing and LEGO Toy Factory Tycoon, relaxed and management-style play
  • LEGO Dark Space, LEGO Portals and LEGO Tycoon: Tilted Towers

Anyone can publish a LEGO-style island of their own. Creators build them with Unreal Editor for Fortnite, and an island that uses the LEGO style has to carry an age rating of E10+ or PEGI 7. Each island has a 12-digit code you can type into the island search.

Odyssey, Brick Life and Islands Compared by Genre, Players and Pace

The table sets the four experiences side by side, including the one that no longer exists. The Players column describes how many people share the space, which is the quickest way to feel the difference between them.

Mode Genre Players What you do Status on 5 November 2026
Odyssey Survival, crafting and exploration Up to 8 per private world Build a village, gather, craft, beat bosses Live, updated through 2026
Brick Life Social role-play and life sim Public server in Brick Bay Take jobs, earn money, decorate a home Live, no major 2026 update
LEGO Islands Many genres, from tycoon to shooter Varies by island Whatever each island sets, such as parkour or fishing Live, new islands appear
Expeditions Four-player co-op action 4 players Hero classes and a mission board Removed 1 November 2025

Odyssey rewards a long-term commitment, because your village and your gear persist in a world you return to. Brick Life is closer to a chat room with jobs, and sessions are disposable. Islands are the shortest and most varied, so quality swings widely from one to the next.

Expeditions: The Mode That Ran From 18 June to 1 November 2025

Expeditions was a fourth experience that no longer exists. It launched on 18 June 2025 as a four-player co-op action-adventure with hero classes and a mission board, and Epic removed it on 1 November 2025.

Its best ideas moved into Odyssey rather than disappearing. Hero Classes came to Odyssey on 3 October 2025, and update v37.50 six days later added hero weapons, ability equipment and potions made at a Cauldron. If you read that Expeditions is a current mode, that page is out of date.

Nothing else in LEGO Fortnite has been removed. Odyssey, Brick Life and LEGO Islands are all still available.

How to Start Playing LEGO Fortnite for Free

There is no separate LEGO app and no extra LEGO download step. You install Fortnite, and the LEGO Fortnite category sits in the same launcher.

  1. Install and sign in to Fortnite with your Epic account.
  2. Open the Discover tab and find the LEGO Fortnite category.
  3. Pick LEGO Fortnite Odyssey or LEGO Fortnite Brick Life from the Epic row, or search for an island.
  4. For Odyssey, choose a free save slot, pick Survival, Sandbox, Cozy or Expert, and invite friends if you want company.

It plays on PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 (released 5 June 2025), and Android. Crossplay is built in, and PlayStation and Xbox support split-screen in Odyssey. Phones and tablets from Apple depend on region, so check availability in your own country before planning around them.

All three groups carry an E10+ rating in the US and PEGI 7 in Europe. For a younger child, set limits first with our guide to Fortnite parental controls, and consider the Cozy world type.

LEGO Styles, V-Bucks and the LEGO Pass

Your Epic account, friends list and V-Bucks all carry over from the rest of Fortnite. A LEGO Style is a variant of a regular Outfit, so owning a Fortnite Outfit that has a LEGO Style gives you the LEGO version in your locker automatically. There were over 1,200 Outfits with a LEGO Style at launch, and thousands now.

Choose the style from the Character menu before you travel into a world or island. A couple of Outfits, Explorer Emilie and Mr. Dappermint, are free if you link your Epic and LEGO accounts.

Nothing is required to spend money. The LEGO Pass is optional and costs 1,200 V-Bucks, down from 1,400 after the March 2026 price change. It is included with Fortnite Crew, which costs $11.99 a month, and Epic has scheduled a LEGO Mini-Pass for 5 December 2026. If you buy something by mistake, read how to refund items in Fortnite.

Which LEGO Fortnite Mode to Start With

Match the mode to the kind of evening you want, not to the name on the tile.

If this sounds like you Start with
You like survival, crafting and exploring Odyssey
You want to chat, role-play and decorate a home Brick Life
You have 15 minutes and want something quick A LEGO Island
You are setting this up for a young child Odyssey in Cozy world type, or a LEGO Island
You want shared goals with friends over weeks Odyssey in a private world

Most newcomers should begin with Odyssey in a Cozy world, because it teaches building and crafting without the stress of the harder world types. Brick Life is the better pick if your group would rather hang out than grind for resources. You do not have to pick one for good, since they all share the same account and the same locker.
