The best weather app for most people is the one already on the phone, and that has only been true for a couple of years. Apple’s own app now carries next-hour precipitation, severe alerts and an air quality reading, and it holds a 4.82 average from more than 1.8 million US ratings.
The other nine below exist because that app answers one question well and several others not at all. Ten are ranked, all free to install, and each entry says plainly which job it is better at than the default.
Why Weather Apps Disagree With Each Other
Two apps showing different forecasts for the same street are not both wrong. They are reading different models, and sometimes the same model at different resolutions.
Forecasts come from numerical weather prediction, simulations run on supercomputers by national agencies. The American GFS, the European ECMWF and various regional models all produce different output, and an app chooses which to show you.
That is why Windy lets you compare models side by side and why a mainstream app never does. One is built for people who want to see the disagreement; the other hides it and picks for you.
In the United States the underlying observations and alerts are public. The National Weather Service publishes them through its own public API, which is why so many free radar apps exist and why their severe weather alerts are identical.

The 10 Best Weather Apps, Ranked
1. Weather: The app already on your phone

Price: Free · App Store rating: 4.82 from 1,855,314 ratings · Version: 2.8 · Updated: 2026-10-19 · Requires: iOS 10.0 or later
Apple’s own app is the one already on the phone, and it stopped being a joke some years ago. It now carries next-hour precipitation, a ten-day forecast, severe weather notifications and an air quality reading, all free and with no account.
Version 2.8 shipped on October 19, 2026 and it holds a 4.82 average from more than 1.8 million US ratings. Where it falls short is depth: there are no customisable layers, no radar loop worth studying and nothing for anyone who wants to read a weather map rather than be told the answer.
2. MyRadar Accurate Weather Radar: Checking the radar in two seconds

Price: Free · App Store rating: 4.85 from 1,086,032 ratings · Version: 7.128.1 · Updated: 2026-10-22 · Requires: iOS 16.6 or later
MyRadar opens onto the radar rather than onto a forecast card, which is exactly what you want when deciding whether to leave now or in twenty minutes. It is the highest rated app on this list at 4.85 from more than a million ratings.
Aviation Data Systems built it around the map, with hurricane tracks, wildfire layers and aviation charts available on top. The free version is ad-supported and a paid tier removes them and adds layers.

3. Windy.com: Reading a weather map properly

Price: Free · App Store rating: 4.82 from 80,243 ratings · Version: 51.030224 · Updated: 2026-10-09 · Requires: iOS 16.0 or later
Windy began as a wind map for pilots, sailors and paragliders, and it remains the most information-dense app on this list. Multiple forecast models can be compared side by side, which no mainstream app offers.
Layers cover wind, gusts, waves, temperature, cloud cover and more, animated across a world map. It is free, rates 4.82, and it is genuinely harder to use than the rest, which is the honest trade for what it shows.
4. CARROT Weather: Customisation, and jokes

Price: Free · App Store rating: 4.70 from 87,719 ratings · Version: 6.9.2 · Updated: 2026-10-09 · Requires: iOS 15.0 or later
CARROT delivers an accurate forecast through a narrator that insults you, which sounds like a gimmick and turns out to be the most configurable weather app on the platform. Data sources can be switched, and almost every screen can be rearranged.
The free tier covers the basics and the paid tier unlocks the customisation, widgets and alerts that make it worth having. At 4.70 from 87,719 ratings it is the highest regarded of the paid-tier apps here.

5. Zoom Earth: Watching a storm move

Price: Free · App Store rating: 4.85 from 39,717 ratings · Version: 6.3.3 · Updated: 2026-10-21 · Requires: iOS 15.5 or later
Zoom Earth puts live satellite imagery, storm tracks and rainfall radar on a globe you can spin and zoom. For following a hurricane or a wildfire it is the clearest presentation available free.
It is a map first and a forecast second, so it complements a conventional app rather than replacing one. It holds 4.85 and version 6.3.3 arrived on October 21, 2026.
6. The Weather Channel: A single app that does everything

Price: Free · App Store rating: 4.76 from 6,096,726 ratings · Version: 16.30 · Updated: 2026-10-23 · Requires: iOS 26.0 or later
The Weather Channel app has 6.1 million US ratings, more than four times any rival here, and it earns a 4.76 average with that volume behind it. Forecasts, radar, video and severe alerts are all present.
The cost is clutter. It is the most heavily monetised app on this list, with advertising and video promotion throughout, which is the price of a free service backed by a television network.

7. AccuWeather: Knowing exactly when the rain starts

Price: Free · App Store rating: 4.59 from 1,496,326 ratings · Version: 21.0.27 · Updated: 2026-10-07 · Requires: iOS 17.0 or later
AccuWeather’s distinguishing feature is MinuteCast, a minute-by-minute precipitation forecast for a specific street address over the next two hours. For deciding whether to walk the dog now, nothing else is as directly useful.
At 4.59 it is the lowest rated of the mainstream options here, and the app carries heavy advertising. Version 21.0.27 shipped on October 7, 2026.
8. Ventusky: Seeing the pattern, not the number

Price: Free · App Store rating: 4.81 from 35,278 ratings · Version: 57 · Updated: 2026-10-14 · Requires: iOS 16.0 or later
Ventusky animates weather across a map in a way that makes patterns obvious: wind streaming around pressure systems, rain bands sweeping through, temperature gradients moving. It is the most beautiful app here and also a serious tool.
It is free with 4.81 from 35,278 ratings. Like Windy it assumes you want to read a map rather than a sentence, which makes it a poor first app and an excellent second one.
9. RainViewer: Rain radar with no clutter

Price: Free · App Store rating: 4.55 from 30,877 ratings · Version: 8.2.1 · Updated: 2026-10-09 · Requires: iOS 15.0 or later
RainViewer does one thing: rain radar, with past frames and forecast frames you can scrub through. It is light, quick and far less cluttered than the big-name apps.
The free tier is generous and the advertising is restrained. At 4.55 from 30,877 ratings it is less proven than MyRadar, and it is the better choice if you want a radar app that is not also trying to be a portal.
10. Weather & Radar: Conservative European forecasting

Price: Free · App Store rating: 4.68 from 305,892 ratings · Version: 2026.20 · Updated: 2026-10-12 · Requires: iOS 17.0 or later
Weather & Radar comes from WetterOnline, a German meteorological service, and the forecasting pedigree shows in how conservative the predictions are. The radar presentation is among the cleanest here.
It holds 4.68 from 305,892 ratings and updates frequently. For US users the brand is unfamiliar, which is the main reason it is overlooked rather than any shortcoming in the app.

Radar Apps and Forecast Apps Are Different Tools
The split runs through this whole list and explains most of the disappointment people have with weather apps.
- Forecast apps answer what the day will be like. Apple Weather, AccuWeather, The Weather Channel. You read a number and move on.
- Radar apps answer whether it is raining in twenty minutes. MyRadar, RainViewer, Weather Hi-Def Radar. You read a moving picture.
- Map apps answer what the weather is doing. Windy, Ventusky, Zoom Earth. You read a pattern and draw your own conclusion.
Most people want the first and occasionally need the second. Installing one of each costs nothing and ends the search, which is a better outcome than hunting for a single app that does all three well, because none of them does.
The Battery Cost of a Weather App
Weather apps are among the heaviest background users on a phone, because a live radar and frequent location lookups are both expensive. Several of these request location access permanently rather than while in use.
Set location access to While Using the App wherever the alerts allow it, and turn off background refresh for any app you open deliberately rather than rely on for warnings. If a phone is draining faster than it used to, a stack of weather apps is a common cause.
The exception is severe weather alerting. If you live where tornado or flash flood warnings matter, those apps need the permissions, and the battery cost is the point rather than a bug.
What Decided the Order
Every app here is free to install and every figure comes from its US App Store listing on October 25, 2026. Apps rated below 4.0 were dropped, which removed one long-standing name, and so were two whose last release predates 2026.
After that, the ranking weighs how well each app does its own job against how many people it suits. An app that is brilliant for storm chasers ranks below one that is merely good for everybody, which is why Windy sits behind Apple Weather despite being the more impressive piece of software.
Forecast accuracy was not compared. Measuring it properly needs months of logged predictions against observed outcomes in multiple locations, and any claim made without that work is guesswork.
How to Choose a Weather App
Open the one you already have first. If Apple Weather tells you what you need, the search is finished and the other nine are solving problems you do not have.
Add MyRadar or RainViewer if your real question is usually about rain in the next hour. A radar you can read in two seconds beats a forecast you have to interpret.
Add Windy or Ventusky if you sail, fly, cycle, garden or simply want to understand what is coming rather than be told. Both are free and both assume you are willing to learn a map.
Pay for CARROT only if you will use the customisation, since the free tier covers the forecast itself. Everything else here is free to install, and the differences are in advertising volume rather than price.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which weather app is the most accurate?
No app is uniformly most accurate, because they draw on the same national models and differ in which one they show and how they interpret it. Accuracy varies by location and by how far ahead you look, so a single winner does not exist.
Is Apple Weather good enough?
For most people, yes. It carries next-hour precipitation, a ten-day forecast, severe notifications and air quality, free, and it averages 4.82 from more than 1.8 million ratings. It falls short only if you want layered maps or model comparison.
What is the best free weather radar app?
MyRadar, which opens directly onto the radar and holds the highest average on this list at 4.85 from more than a million ratings. RainViewer is the lighter, less cluttered alternative.
Do weather apps drain the battery?
They can, because live radar and constant location lookups are both expensive. Setting location access to While Using the App and turning off background refresh for apps you open manually removes most of the cost.
