Minecraft texture packs are downloadable files that replace the default blocks, mobs and menus, and the most downloaded full overhaul right now is Bare Bones at 7,930,370, closely followed by Faithful 64x at 7,642,231. Bare Bones has not been updated since 20 December 2025, so the best-maintained of the big names is Faithful, which received a release on 15 September 2026 for Minecraft 26.3.
A full retexture and a single-purpose add-on that only changes leaves or the sky are different things, and a pack that stopped updating years ago still installs. Below, the 11 full overhauls and seven add-ons each get a download count, a last-update date and the newest game version they are built for, so you can see which are alive.
Texture Packs or Resource Packs: What Changed in Java 1.6.1
The two names describe the same idea at different moments in history. Java Edition 1.6.1, released on 1 July 2013, replaced the old texture pack system with resource packs. The first snapshot to carry the change was 13w24a on 13 June 2013, and Mojang shipped a converter tool so 1.5 packs could carry over.
The difference was practical. Old texture packs lived in a folder called texturepacks and only one could be active at a time. Resource packs sit in resourcepacks, can be stacked from Java 1.7.2, and cover far more than textures: models, sounds, music, languages, fonts and the End Poem text.
Players still say texture pack because that was the original word, and Bedrock Edition still labels its built-in pack Minecraft Texture Pack. Java ships with three built-in resource packs: Default, Programmer Art and High Contrast.
Minecraft Texture Packs Ranked by Downloads: 11 Full Overhauls
A full overhaul redraws blocks, items and usually mobs, and it can be used alone. Everything in this table is ranked by download count, highest first. Read the last two columns before the first one, because a pack with millions of downloads and a 2025 update date will not carry its features onto the 26.x releases.

| Rank | Pack | Resolution | Downloads | Last file | Newest version tagged |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Bare Bones | 16x | 7,930,370 | 20 Dec 2025 | 1.21.9 |
| 2 | Faithful 64x | 64x | 7,642,231 | 15 Sep 2026 | 26.3 |
| 3 | Faithful 32x | 32x | 5,232,341 | 15 Sep 2026 | 26.3 |
| 4 | Ashen 16x | 16x | 2,606,370 | 18 Oct 2026 | 26.3 |
| 5 | Golden Days | 16x | 1,278,781 | 24 Oct 2026 | 26.3 |
| 6 | Whimscape | 16x | 1,111,666 | 4 Nov 2026 | 26.3 |
| 7 | Excalibur | 16x | 905,815 | 22 Sep 2026 | 26.3 |
| 8 | Nature X | 16x | 689,597 | 20 Oct 2026 | 26.3 |
| 9 | Optimum Realism | 64x | 511,583 | 26 Oct 2026 | 26.3 |
| 10 | Soartex Grove | 64x | 294,489 | 31 Oct 2026 | 26.3 |
| 11 | JICKLUS | 16x | 267,210 | 22 Sep 2026 | 26.3 |
Here is what each of the 11 does and what it asks of you.
- Bare Bones by RobotPants is the flat-shaded, bright look of the official trailers. It needs no extra mods, but its newest file is version 1.4.12 from 20 December 2025, tagged to 1.21.9 and not to any 26.x release.
- Faithful 64x keeps the vanilla style with 16 times the pixels of a default texture. Its Release 15 landed on 15 September 2026 for the Wilderness Bound drop, and it needs nothing beyond the game itself.
- Faithful 32x is the same volunteer team at half the resolution. The pack started in 2010, its September 2026 release targets 26.3, and one file stretches back as far as Java 1.10.
- Ashen 16x turns the game medieval, with custom models for many blocks and new block variants. Version 1.17.2 for 26.3 shipped on 18 October 2026, and the author states plainly that out-of-date game versions are not supported.
- Golden Days restores old Beta-era textures, lighting and sounds. It needs Polytone and Entity Model Features, and its newest build, 16.6, is dated 24 October 2026 and also tagged for 26.4 snapshots.
- Whimscape is a 16x pixel-art overhaul with custom entity models and the newest file in this list, 26.1-26.3_r4 on 4 November 2026. Its emissive textures, custom sky and connected glass all need an optional mod or OptiFine.
- Excalibur by Maffhew is an epic medieval fantasy pack at 16x with custom models, fonts and audio. Version 26.3_01 is from 22 September 2026, and its Random Mobs feature needs OptiFine.
- Nature X makes foliage, water and skies lusher. It requires Sodium, Continuity, Polytone and Fabric API together, which makes it a Fabric-only pack in practice.
- Optimum Realism is a realistic 64x overhaul with PBR and parallax occlusion, and its R4.2.1 build is from 26 October 2026. The 128x version is paid, and the creator lists a GTX 1050 and 8 GB of RAM as the floor for the 64x pack.
- Soartex Grove is a themed 64x replacement, currently in its Beta Edition v2 from 31 October 2026. It has the lowest count of the three 64x packs but one of the freshest files in the list.
- JICKLUS goes rustic but classic, with vanilla-style blocks and realistic touches. The Java version is free, a Bedrock version is sold in the Marketplace, and the newest file is from 22 September 2026.

Seven Add-On Packs Ranked by Downloads
Add-ons change one thing and are meant to sit on top of a main pack. They dominate download charts because they are installed alongside nearly everything else, which is why Fresh Animations shows 51,281,576. That is more than six times Bare Bones and more than the next three add-ons combined, yet it only changes how mobs move.

| Rank | Pack | What it changes | Downloads | Last file | Extra mod needed |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Fresh Animations | Animated mob models | 51,281,576 | 1 Nov 2026 | Entity Model Features and Entity Texture Features |
| 2 | Motschen’s Better Leaves | 3D leaf models | 21,383,432 | 14 Sep 2026 | None, Cull Leaves suggested |
| 3 | Fast Better Grass | Grass side textures | 13,960,488 | 15 Sep 2026 | None |
| 4 | Fullbright UB | Maximum brightness | 12,222,849 | 19 Sep 2026 | Polytone if you run Sodium |
| 5 | Dramatic Skys | HD skies and clouds | 11,379,266 | 18 Sep 2026 | A custom sky mod such as Skyboxify |
| 6 | Default Dark Mode | Dark menus and GUI | 8,210,042 | 19 Sep 2026 | None, OptiFine only for the loading screen |
| 7 | Programmer Art Fix | Old pre-1.14 look | 7,657,479 | 25 Oct 2026 | None |
- Fresh Animations adds animated mob models. It runs on the mods Entity Model Features and Entity Texture Features, or on OptiFine, and there is no Bedrock version planned. Its newest build is 1.11.2, tagged to 26.3.
- Motschen’s Better Leaves swaps flat leaf textures for 3D models. Its newest file is tagged to 26.2 rather than 26.3, and the creator recommends the Cull Leaves mod alongside Sodium to keep frame rates up.
- Fast Better Grass puts the top texture of grass-type blocks on their sides, and works at any resolution from 8x up. The file labelled 26.3+ is dated 15 September 2026.
- Fullbright UB lifts the lightmap so caves need no torches. On Sodium you must add the small Polytone mod, and version 7.0 is tagged to 26.2 and 26.3.
- Dramatic Skys adds realistic clouds and lighting across 79 biomes. The public file is a demo, with the full set behind a Patreon, and a mod that enables custom skyboxes is required.
- Default Dark Mode darkens menus, the GUI and the interfaces of supported mods without touching blocks. OptiFine is optional and only affects the loading screen, and the 26.3 version is dated 19 September 2026.
- Programmer Art Fix keeps the pre-1.14 Programmer Art look and fills in newer blocks and items. A Bedrock port called Classic Texture Fix exists.
Packs Still Named Elsewhere That Have Stopped Updating
Older lists keep recommending the packs below. Each is real, but the dates show how long ago the author last touched it, and none is tagged for the current 26.3 release. Dokucraft is given no download figure here because the available numbers conflict.
| Pack | Type | Last update | Last version tagged |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clarity | 32x | September 2024 | 1.21.1 |
| Faithless | 16x | August 2024 | 1.21 |
| Stay True | 16x | 16 May 2025 | 1.21.5 |
| John Smith Legacy | 32x | 20 October 2019 | 1.12.x |
| Dokucraft TSC Light | 32x | 3 January 2024 | Not stated |
| Visible Ores | 16x | 21 May 2026 | 26.1.2 |
| Night Vision | Utility | 11 October 2026 | 26.1 and later |
Visible Ores and Night Vision are utility packs rather than retextures. Night Vision is a lightmap pack that needs Polytone or OptiFine, and it relies on a game feature that only exists from 26.1. Visible Ores outlines ores so they glow, which many servers treat as an unfair advantage, so check the rules before joining one with it active.
Which Packs Need OptiFine, and What to Use on 26.3

Many resource packs include features that only OptiFine reads: custom entity models, connected textures, random mobs and custom colours. Vanilla Minecraft loads such a pack without complaint and quietly ignores those features. OptiFine has no stable build for Java 26.3, the current full release from 15 September 2026.
The most recent final OptiFine build is for 1.21.11. Only preview builds exist for 26.1.2 and 26.2, and nothing at all for 26.3. Any pack that demands the latest stable OptiFine is therefore unavailable in practice on the current version, and Misa’s Realistic, which states exactly that requirement, is the clearest example.
Open-source mods now read the same pack formats and are all tagged for 26.3. Sodium speeds up rendering but adds no pack features, while Continuity handles connected textures and emissives, Entity Model Features and Entity Texture Features handle custom mobs, and Polytone handles colours and lightmaps. Iris loads shaders on top of Sodium. Our guide to the best Minecraft mods covers installing them.
Packs that need no extra mod at all are Faithful 32x and 64x, Bare Bones, JICKLUS, Ashen 16x and Programmer Art Fix. If you are unsure, start with one of those.
How to Install a Texture Pack on Java Edition
- Download the pack as a
.zipfile. Do not unzip it, because the game reads the archive directly. - In Minecraft open Options, then Resource Packs, then Open Pack Folder.
- Paste the
.zipinto the folder. You can also drag the file onto the resource pack screen and the game copies it for you. - Pick the pack from the Available column, move it to Selected, and press Done. The game reloads.
The folder is resourcepacks inside .minecraft. On Windows press Win+R and enter %appdata%/.minecraft/resourcepacks. On macOS it is ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/resourcepacks, and on Linux ~/.minecraft/resourcepacks/.
Load order matters when you stack packs. The bottom-most selected pack loads first and each one above it overrides or merges, so put add-ons such as Better Leaves or Default Dark Mode above your main pack. A very large pack also asks more of your graphics card, which is worth checking against our best gaming laptop picks before you commit to 64x.
How to Install a Texture Pack on Bedrock Edition
Bedrock uses a different file type. A Bedrock pack arrives as a .mcpack for one pack or a .mcaddon for a bundle, and opening the file makes Minecraft import it automatically. Java .zip packs do not work on Bedrock, so you need a version built for it.
- Activate it: go to Settings, then Global Resources, and move the pack from My Packs to Active. You can instead attach it to a single world in Create New World or Edit World.
- Place one by hand: a folder or
.zipgoes indevelopment_resource_packsinside thecom.mojangfolder. On Windows that is under%appdata%\Minecraft Bedrock\Users, and on iPhone and iPad it isOn My iPhone/Minecraft/games/com.mojang. - Marketplace packs are stored inside the game and need a purchase or a Marketplace Pass.
- Joining a world that uses a pack prompts you to download it.
Few packs here exist on Bedrock. Faithful 32x and 64x have separate Bedrock versions, JICKLUS is sold in the Marketplace, and Programmer Art Fix has the Classic Texture Fix port. Fresh Animations has no Bedrock version planned. Ore UI menus are deliberately closed to resource packs on Bedrock, so GUI packs do nothing there.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the most downloaded Minecraft texture pack?
Among full overhauls it is Bare Bones with 7,930,370 downloads, though its last file is from December 2025. Faithful 64x follows at 7,642,231 and is updated for 26.3. Fresh Animations has far more at 51,281,576, but it only replaces mob models.
Is a texture pack the same as a resource pack?
Yes in everyday use. Java 1.6.1 replaced texture packs with resource packs on 1 July 2013, and the newer format also covers sounds, models, fonts and languages. Anything labelled a texture pack today is installed as a resource pack on Java.
Do texture packs work on Minecraft 26.3?
Packs tagged for 26.3 do, and 10 of the 11 overhauls above are. Bare Bones is tagged only to 1.21.9. Any pack that relies on stable OptiFine is unavailable for 26.3 until a stable build appears.
Can I use a texture pack with mods?
Yes. Texture packs and mods load separately, and several packs here need a mod to show every feature. For command and building tricks to test a new pack in a world, see our Minecraft commands list.
