There are 43 Minecraft enchantments in Java Edition 26.3 and 42 in Bedrock Edition, which has no Sweeping Edge. Every one is listed below by the item that carries it, with its maximum level, what it does and which enchantments it cannot share an item with.
Many older lists were written before the mace and the spear arrived. This one includes Density, Breach and Wind Burst, added on 13 June 2024, and Lunge, added on 9 December 2025. It is current as of 5 November 2026.
How Many Minecraft Enchantments Are There

Java Edition 26.3 defines exactly 43 enchantments. Thirty-six of them can be offered by an enchanting table on a fresh item. The other seven are treasure enchantments that a table never offers: Curse of Binding, Curse of Vanishing, Frost Walker, Mending, Soul Speed, Swift Sneak and Wind Burst.
Bedrock Edition counts 42, because Sweeping Edge exists only in Java. No enchantment exists only in Bedrock. The same two curses are simply stored under different internal names. Cleaving, an experimental enchantment from the Java Combat Tests builds, never reached a release and is not counted.
Versions 26.1 on 24 March 2026, 26.2 on 16 June 2026 and 26.3 on 15 September 2026 added, removed and renamed nothing. The newest enchantment is still Lunge.
Armor Enchantments: Max Levels and Conflicts
Thirteen enchantments live on helmets, chestplates, leggings and boots. Four of them are protection types, and a piece can carry only one of the four.
| Enchantment | Max level | What it does | Cannot combine with |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aqua Affinity | I | Removes the 5x mining speed penalty for working with your head underwater. Helmets and turtle shells. | None |
| Blast Protection | IV | Cuts explosion damage by 8% per level and adds 15% explosion knockback resistance per level. | Protection, Fire Protection, Projectile Protection |
| Curse of Binding (treasure, curse) | I | The piece cannot be taken off an armor slot until you die or it breaks. | None |
| Depth Strider | III | Restores one third of normal swimming speed per level, so level III is full speed in water. Boots only. | Frost Walker |
| Feather Falling | IV | Reduces fall damage and ender pearl damage. Boots only. | None |
| Fire Protection | IV | Reduces fire and lava damage and shortens burn time by 15% per level. | Protection, Blast Protection, Projectile Protection |
| Frost Walker (treasure) | II | Freezes water under your feet into frosted ice and makes you immune to magma blocks. Boots only. | Depth Strider |
| Projectile Protection | IV | Reduces damage from arrows, tridents, blaze fireballs, shulker bullets and wind charges. | Protection, Fire Protection, Blast Protection |
| Protection | IV | Cuts nearly all damage by 4% per level on each piece: 16% at IV, 64% across four pieces, with an overall cap of 80%. | Fire Protection, Blast Protection, Projectile Protection |
| Respiration | III | Extends how long you can stay underwater. Helmets and turtle shells. | None |
| Soul Speed (treasure) | III | Speeds you up on soul sand and soul soil and wears the boots down faster. | None |
| Swift Sneak (treasure) | III | Raises sneaking speed by 15% of walking speed per level, 75% at III. Leggings only. | None |
| Thorns | III | A chance to damage whatever hits you, paid for with extra armor durability. | None |
Unbreaking and Mending also go on every armor piece and are listed with the universal enchantments further down. Swift Sneak is a leggings enchantment, not a boots enchantment, even though an early Deep Dark snapshot in 2022 put it on boots.
Sword, Axe, Mace and Spear Enchantments

Melee enchantments split into a single damage line and everything else. Sharpness, Smite, Bane of Arthropods, Breach and Density all sit in that damage line, so one item takes one of them.
| Enchantment | Max level | What it does | Cannot combine with |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bane of Arthropods | V | Adds 2.5 damage per level against spiders, cave spiders, silverfish, endermites and bees, and slows them with Slowness IV. | Sharpness, Smite, Breach, Density |
| Breach | IV | A mace hit ignores 15% of the target armor effectiveness per level, 60% at IV. | Density, Sharpness, Smite, Bane of Arthropods |
| Density | V | Adds 0.5 damage per block fallen, per level, to a mace smash attack. | Breach, Sharpness, Smite, Bane of Arthropods |
| Fire Aspect | II | Sets the target on fire for 4 seconds per level. | None |
| Knockback | II | Increases melee knockback by about 2.6 blocks per level. | None |
| Looting | III | Raises the maximum count of most mob drops by 1 per level and adds 1 percentage point to rare drop chance per level. | None |
| Lunge | III | A spear jab launches you forward at a cost of 1 to 3 hunger points and 1 point of durability. | None |
| Sharpness | V | Java damage rises by 1 at level I and 0.5 per level after, so +3 at V. | Smite, Bane of Arthropods, Breach, Density |
| Smite | V | Adds 2.5 damage per level against undead mobs. | Sharpness, Bane of Arthropods, Breach, Density |
| Sweeping Edge (Java only) | III | Sweep attacks deal 50%, 66.7% and 75% of the sword base damage at levels I to III. | None |
| Wind Burst (treasure) | III | After a mace smash attack it launches you back into the air, higher at each level, so you can chain smashes. | None |
Swords take Sharpness, Smite, Bane of Arthropods, Looting, Fire Aspect, Knockback and Sweeping Edge. Spears take the same list except Sweeping Edge, and add Lunge. A mace takes Density, Breach, Smite, Bane of Arthropods, Fire Aspect and Wind Burst, but never Sharpness.
Bow, Crossbow and Trident Enchantments
Ranged weapons carry the most conflicting pairs. A bow chooses between Infinity and Mending, a crossbow between Multishot and Piercing, and a trident has to decide whether it is thrown or ridden.
| Enchantment | Max level | What it does | Cannot combine with |
|---|---|---|---|
| Channeling | I | A thrown trident calls down lightning on its target during a thunderstorm. | Riptide |
| Flame | I | Bow arrows burn, and they light TNT and campfires. | None |
| Impaling | V | Adds 2.5 damage per level against aquatic mobs in Java, or any mob standing in water or rain in Bedrock. | None |
| Infinity | I | Fired arrows are not used up, except spectral and tipped arrows. | Mending |
| Loyalty | III | A thrown trident flies back to you, faster at higher levels. | Riptide |
| Multishot | I | Fires three arrows in a spread for the price of one, at extra durability cost. | Piercing |
| Piercing | IV | Arrows pass through as many mobs as the level, and can be picked up again. | Multishot |
| Power | V | Raises arrow damage by 25% x (level + 1), so +150% at V. | None |
| Punch | II | Increases arrow knockback. | None |
| Quick Charge | III | Cuts crossbow load time by 0.25 seconds per level, from 1.25 seconds to 0.5 at III. | None |
| Riptide | III | Using the trident in water or rain launches you instead of throwing it. | Loyalty, Channeling |
Power, Punch, Flame and Infinity are bow enchantments. Quick Charge, Multishot and Piercing belong to the crossbow. The remaining four go on the trident. Riptide excludes Loyalty and Channeling, while Impaling conflicts with nothing.
Tool, Fishing Rod and Universal Enchantments
Pickaxes, shovels, axes and hoes share Efficiency, Fortune and Silk Touch. Fishing rods have their own pair, and four enchantments reach almost every item that has durability.
| Enchantment | Max level | What it does | Cannot combine with |
|---|---|---|---|
| Efficiency | V | Raises mining speed. Pickaxes, shovels, axes and hoes, plus shears by anvil. | None |
| Fortune | III | A chance of extra drops from ores, crops, leaves and similar blocks. Does not apply to shears. | Silk Touch |
| Luck of the Sea | III | Raises the share of treasure catches while fishing by about 2.1 percentage points per level. | None |
| Lure | III | Cuts fish bite wait time by 5 seconds per level. | None |
| Silk Touch | I | Blocks that normally drop something else drop themselves. | Fortune |
| Mending (treasure) | I | Repairs the item with experience you collect, 2 durability per point of experience. | Infinity |
| Unbreaking | III | Gives an item a chance to skip durability loss: 50%, 66.7% and 75% on tools, 20%, 26.7% and 30% on armor. | None |
| Curse of Vanishing (treasure, curse) | I | The item is deleted from the world if you die holding it. | None |
Unbreaking and Mending fit tools, weapons, armor, bows, crossbows, tridents, maces, spears and fishing rods. Shields, elytra, shears, flint and steel and brushes take them from an anvil, because an enchanting table will not enchant those items.
Enchantments That Cannot Be Combined
Seven rules cover every conflict in the game. Break one and the item will not accept the second enchantment.
- Armor protections. Protection, Fire Protection, Blast Protection and Projectile Protection exclude each other on one piece.
- Fortune and Silk Touch. A tool takes one or the other.
- Infinity and Mending. A bow cannot carry both.
- Multishot and Piercing. A crossbow takes one or the other.
- Channeling and Riptide, and Loyalty and Riptide. Riptide excludes both throwing enchantments, while Loyalty and Channeling combine freely.
- Depth Strider and Frost Walker. Boots take one or the other.
- The damage line. Sharpness, Smite, Bane of Arthropods, Breach and Density are one group, so an item carries only one of the five.
On an anvil, the clashing enchantment is dropped or the whole combination is refused, depending on the edition. Only commands and data packs get around these rules, and the Minecraft commands list is the place to start if you want to go that way.
Lunge, Density, Breach and Wind Burst: The Newest Four

Each of the four arrived with a specific release, and three of them exist for weapons that did not exist two years ago.
- Lunge III is a spear enchantment. It arrived with Java 1.21.11 “Mounts of Mayhem” on 9 December 2025. Each jab launches you forward, costs 1 to 3 hunger points depending on level and wears 1 point of durability. It combines with Mending.
- Density V and Breach IV are mace enchantments from Java 1.21 “Tricky Trials” on 13 June 2024, and from Bedrock 1.21.0. Density adds 0.5 damage per fallen block per level. Breach strips 15% of armor effectiveness per level. Mojang rates Density as common and Breach as rare.
- Wind Burst III also came with the mace in 1.21. It is treasure only, found in ominous vaults at level I, and levels II and III come from combining books on an anvil.
- Swift Sneak III is older, from the 1.19 Wild Update on 7 June 2022. A boots version was removed in snapshot 22w11a, and it has been a leggings enchantment since snapshot 22w12a.
Treasure Enchantments and Where Each One Comes From
Treasure enchantments never appear on an enchanting table, on gear sold by villagers or on mob equipment. They come as books or as pre-enchanted loot.
| Enchantment | Max level | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Mending | I | Structure loot outside villages, fishing, and librarian villagers at any level |
| Frost Walker | II | Jungle temple and stronghold chests, fishing, and librarian villagers |
| Soul Speed | III | Bastion remnant chests and piglin bartering only |
| Swift Sneak | III | Ancient city loot chests only |
| Wind Burst | III | Ominous vaults in trial chambers, at level I only |
| Curse of Binding | I | Fishing, librarian villagers and structure loot |
| Curse of Vanishing | I | Fishing, librarian villagers and structure loot |
Librarian villagers sell every non-treasure book plus Frost Walker, Mending and both curses. They never sell Soul Speed, Swift Sneak or Wind Burst. Treasure books cost double the emeralds of an ordinary book, and the villager trades guide covers how prices move.
Max Levels the Enchanting Table Will Not Offer
A level 30 table result is the best the table can show, but a few top levels sit beyond it on certain materials.
- Sharpness V appears at a table only on golden tools.
- Thorns III cannot come from a table on any armor piece.
- Quick Charge III cannot come from a table. The table stops at II.
- Efficiency V is capped at IV on stone and diamond tools. Other tiers can reach V.
In every case an enchanted book on an anvil fills the gap.
Java and Bedrock Differences

The two editions share 42 enchantments, and the differences are rules, not names. Since Java 1.21 every enchantment is defined in a data pack, which is why data packs and mods can add their own beyond the 43 counted here.
- Sweeping Edge is Java only.
- Axe damage enchantments. Sharpness, Smite and Bane of Arthropods on an axe need an anvil in Java but come from the table in Bedrock.
- Thorns on helmets, leggings and boots follows the same split: anvil only in Java, table in Bedrock. Chestplates take it from the table in both.
- Impaling hits aquatic mobs in Java, and any mob in water or rain in Bedrock.
- Channeling in Bedrock also triggers on a lightning rod in any rain.
- Silk Touch on shears is possible by anvil in Bedrock only.
- Curse names. The curses are stored as binding_curse and vanishing_curse in Java and as binding and vanishing in Bedrock.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many enchantments are there in Minecraft?
Java Edition 26.3 has 43 and Bedrock Edition has 42. Bedrock lacks Sweeping Edge, and neither edition has an enchantment the other is missing apart from that one.
What is the newest enchantment in Minecraft?
Lunge, a spear enchantment with a maximum level of III, added in Java 1.21.11 on 9 December 2025. The previous additions were Density, Breach and Wind Burst for the mace on 13 June 2024.
Can you put Sharpness and Smite on the same sword?
No. Sharpness, Smite, Bane of Arthropods, Breach and Density form one group, so an item carries only one of them. Most players pick Sharpness V for general fighting and Smite V for undead.
Which enchantments cannot come from an enchanting table?
Seven treasure enchantments: Curse of Binding, Curse of Vanishing, Frost Walker, Mending, Soul Speed, Swift Sneak and Wind Burst. They have to come from loot, fishing, piglin bartering or librarian books.
