In the National Retail Federation’s annual Halloween survey, released on 22 September, 4.8 million adults said they plan to dress as one, ahead of vampire at 4.2 million and Batman at 2 million. Among kids, Spider-Man wins by a distance: 4.6 million children plan to wear the suit, twice as many as the next most popular choice.

Costumes are expected to account for $4.4 billion of the $13.5 billion people will spend on Halloween, with another $0.92 billion going on pet costumes. About a third of shoppers, 32 percent, get their costume ideas from online searches.

How to Choose the Right Halloween Costume Size

Costume sizes are not clothing sizes. Rubie’s prints a warning on its listings that its costumes run smaller than regular apparel, and the same holds across most brands, so work from the size chart on the listing rather than the size you normally buy.
