PS6 Release Date: What Sony Has Said About PlayStation 6

Sony has not set a PS6 release date or price. This is what the company has actually said, what has been reported, and what is still only a leak.

There is no PS6 release date yet, and Sony has said so plainly. In May 2026 its chief executive, Hiroki Totoki, told investors the company had not decided when to launch its next console or what to charge for it. Since then the picture has been shaped by two things: a squeeze on memory chips that has already pushed PS5 prices up, and a steady trickle of leaks about what Sony is building.

This guide separates the three kinds of information in circulation. Some of it Sony has confirmed on the record, some has been reported by named outlets with their own sources, and a good deal is leaked spec sheets that may or may not survive to launch. Each section says which is which.

PS6 Release Date: The Short Answer

Short answer: Sony has not announced a PS6 release date. Leaks before the memory shortage pointed to late 2027. Bloomberg reported in February 2026 that Sony was weighing 2028 or even 2029 instead. Sony's own position, repeated since May 2026, is that timing and price are still undecided.

What Sony Has Confirmed, Reported and Leaked About PS6

Most PS6 stories blur these categories together. The table keeps them apart, so you can see how little is official and how much rests on unnamed sources.

When Is PS6 Coming Out? Every Release Window on the Table

History is the best guide Sony has given. PlayStation generations have arrived six or seven years apart: the original PlayStation in 1994, PS2 in 2000, PS3 in 2006, PS4 in 2013 and PS5 in November 2020. A seven-year gap from the PS5 lands on late 2027, which is where hardware leakers placed the console until early 2026.

  • Late 2027: the window most leaks named, and the one that matches the usual gap.
  • 2028 or 2029: reported by Bloomberg in February 2026, which said Sony was considering the delay because of memory costs. Sony did not comment on the report.
  • Undecided: the official line. Totoki said the company wants to watch the market first, and a later interview with The Wall Street Journal repeated it.

The one thing Sony has shown is the groundwork. On 9 October 2025 it published a video with AMD introducing Project Amethyst, a shared research effort on graphics hardware, presented by Mark Cerny, the lead architect of the PS5 and PS5 Pro. Cerny said the new technologies existed only in simulation and that he hoped to bring them to a future console in a few years. The video never names the PS6.

Why Memory Prices Are Holding the PS6 Back

Consoles depend on large amounts of fast memory, and those chips are now in short supply because data centers building artificial intelligence systems are buying them in bulk. Totoki told investors he expects memory prices to stay very high through Sony's fiscal year 2027, which runs to March 2028, and that plans for the next console depend on whether that happens.

The squeeze is already visible in PS5 pricing. Sony raised the price of every PS5 model worldwide from 2 April 2026, citing pressures in the global economy in its PlayStation Blog announcement. In the US the standard PS5 went to $649.99, the Digital Edition to $599.99 and the PS5 Pro to $899.99.

Rising prices also slowed sales. Sony shipped 1.6 million PS5 consoles in the April to June 2026 quarter, down from 2.5 million a year earlier, taking the lifetime total to 95.3 million. That is a big installed base to protect, and one reason Sony has little reason to rush a successor.

PS6 Specs: What the Leaks Describe

Sony has published no PS6 specifications. The details below come from leaked spec sheets for a console codenamed Orion, and they describe a target rather than a finished machine.

  • Processor: an eight-core CPU based on AMD's Zen 6 design.
  • Graphics: an AMD RDNA 5 GPU with roughly 52 to 54 compute units.
  • Memory: 30GB of GDDR7 according to the leaker KeplerL2, with a later report suggesting Sony could settle on 24GB because of cost.
  • Power: a total board power around 160 watts.
  • Manufacturing: a chip reportedly built on a 3nm process.

The Project Amethyst video fills in the direction, if not the numbers. It named three technologies: Neural Arrays, which let groups of compute units work together on machine learning jobs such as upscaling; Radiance Cores, dedicated hardware for ray tracing and path tracing; and Universal Compression, which compresses more kinds of graphics data to stretch memory bandwidth.

Part of that work has already shipped. An upgraded version of PSSR, the PS5 Pro's machine learning upscaler, arrived with Resident Evil Requiem on 27 February 2026 and then reached other games through a system update. Cerny described it as the full version of the super resolution technology Sony co-developed with AMD.

PS6 Price: What the Current Numbers Suggest

No price has been announced, and estimates in circulation range from around $500 to four figures. The more useful guide is what Sony charges today. The PS5 Pro launched at $699.99 in November 2024, rose to $749.99 in August 2025 and has cost $899.99 since April 2026.

  • Memory is the swing factor. Totoki tied both timing and price to memory costs, so a launch during the shortage would likely cost more than one after it.
  • A cheaper model is possible. Sony sold PS5 in disc and digital versions from day one, and a similar split would give it a lower entry price.
  • Business changes are on the table. Totoki said Sony is considering changing its business model to find the best approach, without saying what that means.

Is Sony Making a PS6 Handheld?

Leaked documents describe a handheld codenamed Canis alongside the home console. The reported design uses four smaller Zen 6c CPU cores, an RDNA 5 GPU with between 12 and 20 compute units, LPDDR5X memory and a power draw around 15 watts, small enough for a battery-powered device. Sony has not confirmed it exists.

Do not confuse Canis with the PlayStation Portal, which Sony already sells for $249.99. The Portal is a remote player that streams games from a PS5 in the same home or from the cloud, so it cannot run games on its own. A Canis handheld, if it ships, would be a console in its own right.

Will PS6 Play PS5 Games?

Backward compatibility has not been confirmed. The claim that PS6 will run PS5 and PS4 games comes from a leaked planning document, which the leaker described as several years old. It is plausible for one practical reason: Reuters reported in 2024 that Sony chose AMD for its next console, and staying with the same chip supplier makes running older games far simpler.

The PS5 set the precedent. It plays almost all of the PS4 library, and Sony made that a selling point at launch. Losing it on PS6 would strand a digital library that now accounts for most PlayStation game sales.

Should You Wait for PS6 or Buy a PS5 Now?

If you do not own a PS5, waiting makes little sense on current evidence. Even the earliest leaked window is more than a year away, and the reported one could be three years out. Meanwhile the biggest release on the calendar, Grand Theft Auto VI, is due on 19 November 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

  • Buy a PS5 now if you want to play this year's games, including GTA VI, and are happy with a console that has years of support left. Our comparison of the best gaming consoles weighs it against Xbox and Switch 2.
  • Consider the PS5 Pro only if you have a 4K television and care about the upgraded PSSR. At $899.99 it costs $250 more than the standard model.
  • Wait if you already own a PS5 and it does what you need. New PS5 games will keep arriving for years after a successor launches, and the best-selling games of the generation are already playable.

Cross-platform options also make the choice less final than it used to be. Microsoft's Xbox Play Anywhere programme lets one purchase run on console and PC, and Sony now releases many of its own games on PC a year or two after PS5. More background on the current console is on the PlayStation 5 article on Wikipedia.

Frequently Asked Questions

Has Sony announced the PS6?

Not by name. Sony and AMD have announced Project Amethyst, a joint research effort on graphics hardware for a future console, but Sony has not named, shown or priced the PS6.

When is the PS6 coming out?

There is no date. Leaks pointed to late 2027, Bloomberg reported that Sony was weighing 2028 or 2029, and Sony says it has not decided. Memory prices are the main reason for the uncertainty.

How much will the PS6 cost?

Sony has not said. For comparison, the PS5 Pro costs $899.99 in the US and the standard PS5 costs $649.99 after the April 2026 price rise.

Will my PS5 games work on PS6?

That is not confirmed. A leaked document says PS6 will play PS5 and PS4 games, and staying with AMD chips makes that easier, but Sony has made no announcement.
