Spotify Free is the no-cost tier of Spotify, and it includes the whole music catalogue, podcasts and playlists with ads between tracks. Since September 2025 free listeners on mobile can pick and play any song within a daily allowance, after which playback falls back to shuffle with a capped number of skips.
The limits that still separate it from Premium are audio quality, which tops out at roughly 160 kbps against Premium’s lossless option, offline downloads, which Free does not have at all, and ads. This guide lays out what the free plan does, where it stops and what each paid plan costs in the US.

What Spotify Free Includes

The free plan runs on the same app as Premium, so the home feed, search, library, podcasts and audiobook previews all look identical. You can follow artists, save songs to Liked Songs, build as many playlists as you want and share them, and your listening history feeds the same personalised playlists such as Discover Weekly and daylist.
Spotify’s own description of the updated free tier names three features. Pick & Play lets you open the app and start any song. Search & Play lets you type a track name and play it at once. Share & Play lets you tap a track an artist or friend has posted on social media and hear it immediately.
Messages and daylist work on both tiers. The features Spotify lists as Premium-only are Lossless audio, AI Playlist and Mix, the tool that blends transitions between tracks.
The Limits on Spotify Free

Ads are the most visible limit. Free listeners hear audio ads between songs and see display ads in the app, and there is no way to reduce their frequency. Premium is the only ad-free option.
On-demand play on mobile is rationed. Spotify gives free users a daily allocation of what it calls on-demand time, and when that runs out the app returns to shuffle play with a limited number of skips per hour. Spotify has not published the length of the allowance or the exact skip cap, so the figures that circulate online are estimates rather than policy.
Audio quality is the quieter limit. On the audio quality settings the free plan offers Automatic, Low at about 24 kbps, Normal at about 96 kbps and High at about 160 kbps. Premium adds Very High at about 320 kbps and Lossless at up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC. In the web player, Free streams at AAC 128 kbps and Premium at AAC 256 kbps, and the quality cannot be changed there.
Offline listening is Premium-only. Free users cannot download songs, albums or playlists for use without a connection, which rules the free tier out for flights and areas with no signal.
- Ads between tracks and in the interface
- A daily cap on picking specific songs on mobile, then shuffle with limited skips
- Streaming quality capped at about 160 kbps, or 128 kbps in the web player
- No offline downloads
- No Lossless, AI Playlist or Mix
Spotify Free on Desktop and Web

The desktop app and web player have never used the mobile shuffle rule, so free listeners there can choose any song, album or playlist and play it in order. The ads and the quality cap still apply, and the web player is the only place where the quality setting is fixed.
Podcasts stream at about 96 kbps on all devices regardless of plan, and at 128 kbps in the web player. If you listen mostly to podcasts and talk, the free tier’s audio limits make no practical difference.
What Changed for Free Listeners in September 2025
Until September 2025 the free mobile app was shuffle-only. You could open an album or playlist, but the app chose the order, and a small number of skips per hour was the only control. Choosing a specific song on a phone was a Premium feature for the whole of the free tier’s first decade.
On September 15, 2025 Spotify announced that free listeners worldwide could pick, search and share specific tracks on mobile. The company told reporters the same day that the new on-demand listening comes with a daily time allowance, that shuffle and the hourly skip cap return once it is spent, and that Premium subscribers face neither restriction.
The change narrowed the gap on mobile without closing it. Ads, the 160 kbps ceiling and the absence of downloads were untouched, and those three are now the real reasons to pay.
Quality Settings and Data Use on the Free Plan
Free listeners can still adjust streaming quality inside the limits of the plan. On mobile the app has separate settings for Wi-Fi and cellular streaming, so you can run High at home and Normal on a data plan. The Automatic setting, on by default, adjusts quality to the connection to avoid stuttering.
On desktop the setting lives under your profile picture, then Settings, then Audio Quality. On the web player it cannot be changed. When you play through Spotify Connect to a speaker or TV, the quality is set on the device doing the playing rather than on your phone.
Spotify’s guidance is that higher streaming quality uses more data. At the free tier’s High setting, about 160 kbps, an hour of music uses roughly 70 MB, against roughly 140 MB at Premium’s Very High and far more at Lossless, which Spotify says needs a steady connection of 1.5 to 2 Mbps.
What Spotify Premium Costs
| Plan | Monthly price | Who it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Individual | $12.99 | 1 account; first month $0 for new subscribers |
| Student | $6.99 | 1 account; needs enrolment at an accredited institution |
| Duo | $18.99 | 2 accounts at the same address |
| Family | $21.99 | Up to 6 accounts at the same address |
Spotify lists four paid plans in the US on its Premium page. Individual is $12.99 a month, with the first month free for anyone who has not tried Premium before. Student is $6.99 for people enrolled at an accredited college or university. Duo is $18.99 for two people at one address and Family is $21.99 for up to six.
Every paid plan removes ads, adds downloads and unlimited skips, and raises the quality ceiling to Lossless. Duo and Family give each person a separate account with their own recommendations.
Against the other services, $12.99 sits at the top of the market. Our comparison of the best music streaming services has the current price for every rival, and most of them now bundle lossless audio at a similar rate.
Is Spotify Free Worth Using?
For discovery it is hard to beat. The recommendation playlists, the catalogue and the social features are identical on both tiers, so a free account is a complete way to find music and follow podcasts.
For listening with intent, the gaps show. If you want a specific album in order on your phone every day, or you commute without a signal, the daily allowance and the lack of downloads will push you to Premium within weeks. The quality cap matters less than people assume on a phone speaker and more on a decent pair of headphones; our guide to the best wireless earbuds covers what 160 kbps does and does not hide.
A practical middle path is to run the free tier until the shuffle fallback or the ads become the thing you notice, then take the first month of Individual at $0 and decide with a full month of downloads and lossless behind you.
- Stay on Free if: you mostly listen on desktop, you use Spotify for discovery and podcasts, or you are happy with shuffle on your phone
- Move to Premium if: you want specific albums on mobile every day, you listen offline, or you have headphones good enough to hear the quality gap
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Spotify actually free?
Yes. Spotify Free has no charge, no trial period and needs no card. It includes the full music catalogue and podcasts with ads, within the mobile on-demand allowance and the 160 kbps quality cap.
Can you pick songs on Spotify Free?
Yes, since September 15, 2025. On mobile you can pick, search and play any track until a daily on-demand allowance runs out, after which the app returns to shuffle with limited skips. On desktop and the web player you can always pick songs.
How many skips do you get on Spotify Free?
Spotify has not published a number since the September 2025 change. It says free listeners get a limited number of skips per hour once their daily on-demand time is used up, and that Premium removes the limit.
Does Spotify Free have lossless audio?
No. Lossless, which Spotify added for Premium in September 2025 at up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC, is a paid feature. The free plan tops out at the High setting, about 160 kbps.
