Fortnite Pirate Chest: Where It Is and What It Does

A giant pirate chest glitched into the Override island on October 17. It cannot be opened, drops no loot and counts for no quest, but it plays four tracks and points at the mini season that starts November 1.

The Fortnite pirate chest is a house sized treasure chest that glitched into the Override island on October 17 and has been filling itself in a little more every morning since. It sits in the shallow water east of Sunken Shores, you can land on the lid, and no amount of pickaxe swinging will open it. That is not a bug in your game. The chest is a countdown prop, not a loot container, and it is pointing at the mini season that replaces Override on November 1.

Below is where the chest is, the fastest way to reach it from the Battle Bus, what it actually does when you stand next to it, the daily schedule it has been following, and what is likely to happen to it when the season ends. Every claim about Epic Games is separated from the leaks, because the two are not the same thing.

Where to Find the Fortnite Pirate Chest on the Override Map

The chest sits in the lagoon on the south eastern side of the island, in the stretch of pale blue shallows east of Sunken Shores and below the Mega Maze landmark. Cluster Coast is further east along the same coastline, so if you can see the Pac Man ghost shaped island you have gone too far.

The chest is tall enough to pick out from the Battle Bus on most flight paths across the southern half of the island, which makes the approach simple. Open the map while you are still on the bus, drop a marker on the lagoon, and glide straight to it.

  1. Open the map on the Battle Bus and place a marker in the water east of Sunken Shores.
  2. Jump when the bus is roughly over Stone Sanctum or Shaken Sanctuary, both of which sit inland of the lagoon.
  3. Dive at a steep angle until you are under about 200 metres, then open the glider and aim for the dark silhouette in the water.
  4. Land on the lid rather than in the water. The top surface is solid and gives you a view of the whole south coast.
  5. Walk the full length of the chest if you want to hear the audio, which only plays within a short radius.

There is no loot on or around the chest, so treat the trip as sightseeing rather than a hot drop. The nearest realistic place to gear up afterwards is Sunken Shores to the west or Cluster Coast to the east.

What the Chest Looks Like Up Close

It is a wooden treasure chest on an enormous scale, with a curved lid and a Jolly Roger on the front. It has been arriving in pieces rather than appearing whole: through the first week large sections were semi transparent and flickering, with the geometry snapping into place a chunk at a time. That glitching look fits the Override season, which is built around the island being rewritten mid match.

Nothing about it behaves like a normal container. There is no interaction prompt, no health bar, no loot sparkle and no outline when you aim at it. Pickaxe hits pass through without damage numbers and without harvesting materials, which is unusual even for indestructible props.

What the Fortnite Pirate Chest Actually Does

Right now it does exactly two things: it stands there, and it plays music. Walk within a short distance and a track fades in, looping while you stay close and cutting out when you leave. Four tracks have been attached to it through the build up period:

  • RIOT (Rowdy Pipe'n) by A$AP Rocky
  • What You Saying by Lil Uzi Vert
  • BIRDBRAIN by Jamie Paige featuring Kasane Teto and OK Glass
  • Miku by Anamanaguchi featuring Hatsune Miku

That playlist is the most useful thing about the chest, because every one of those four artists has since been linked to the mini season that follows Override. The chest is effectively a music teaser standing in the water, the same way the Fortnite Festival stage has previewed Icon Series performers in past seasons.

What the chest does not do is just as important. It gives no XP, no loot and no quest credit. Landing on it does not tick off any challenge, and nothing has been found underneath or inside it. Treat a trip out there as a visit to a landmark, not as a way to farm anything.

The Daily Stage Schedule the Chest Has Followed

The chest has been materialising on a fixed daily rhythm, with a new stage landing at 9 AM ET, which is 1 PM UTC and 6 AM PT. Leaks put the full build up at six stages followed by a finished chest on the seventh day. The schedule below maps that pattern onto the calendar from the October 17 start.

Stage Date Arrival time
Chest appears October 17 9 AM ET / 1 PM UTC
Stage 1 October 18 9 AM ET / 1 PM UTC
Stage 2 October 19 9 AM ET / 1 PM UTC
Stage 3 October 20 9 AM ET / 1 PM UTC
Stage 4 October 21 9 AM ET / 1 PM UTC
Stage 5 October 22 9 AM ET / 1 PM UTC
Stage 6, chest complete October 23 9 AM ET / 1 PM UTC

Epic Games has published nothing about the stage count, so the day by day breakdown is a leak rather than an announcement. The one part anybody can verify in game is the start date and the morning timing, which have held steady since the chest arrived on October 17.

Why People Call It the One Piece Chest

The chest has no official name in game. Its internal label is the Nice Shark Chest, which is the sort of placeholder Epic uses to keep data miners guessing, and that name tells you nothing about what it is for. The One Piece nickname comes from everything around it.

A giant treasure chest, pirate iconography and a season ending story moment line up neatly with One Piece, the long running pirate manga and anime whose central premise is a hunt for a legendary treasure. On October 24 the official Fortnite account on X posted a short teaser video captioned with three straw hat emoji, and a straw hat is the single most recognisable object associated with the Straw Hat Pirates and their captain. The same account now carries the line Treasure Hunters 11.1 on its profile.

That is as far as the official record goes. Epic has named the mini season and dated it, and it has posted straw hats. It has not written the words One Piece anywhere on fortnite.com, and there was no trailer on the official Fortnite YouTube channel as of October 24. Everything beyond the hats, including skins, a battle pass and a themed map, is a leak. How the Chest Fits Into Chapter 7 Season 4

Override launched on August 20 with Sonic the Hedgehog headlining the battle pass and a central mechanic built around Override Consoles, which let one player rewrite a rule for the whole server mid match. The season also added Loot Hacks, which change what drops from chests, and a run of crossovers covering KINGDOM HEARTS, Mega Man, Pac Man, Persona 5 Royal and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.

Season ending props are a long running habit in Fortnite, going back to the meteor that hovered over Dusty Depot for weeks in Chapter 1. The pattern is always the same: an object appears, it changes a little every day, the community argues about it, and then it resolves into the next season. The chest is this season's version of that, and it is a quieter one than the island wide corruption that ran through Fortnitemares at the start of October.

What Happens to the Pirate Chest on November 1

The mini season called Treasure Hunters is dated November 1 by Epic's own profile, and Override ends when it begins. Props of this kind do not usually survive a season change intact. The realistic outcomes are that the chest opens as part of a story moment at the changeover, that it is removed with the rest of the Override map furniture, or that it stays and becomes a functional point of interest in the new map.

If you want to see it, go now rather than at the end of the month. Story moment props are frequently vaulted without warning during the downtime before a new season, and there is no guarantee this one gets a farewell event. The anime crossover history is worth skimming too, since the mini season is expected to lean that way and our roundup of Fortnite anime skins shows how Epic has handled licensed anime cosmetics before.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you open the Fortnite pirate chest?

No. There is no interaction prompt, the chest cannot be damaged with any weapon or the pickaxe, and standing on it or shooting it produces no reaction. It is a decorative prop rather than a container, and nothing opens it in a normal match.

Does the pirate chest give XP or loot?

It gives neither. Visiting it awards no XP, drops no items, spawns no floor loot nearby and does not complete any quest or milestone. The only thing you get is the audio that plays when you stand close to it.

Where exactly is the chest on the map?

In the shallow lagoon on the south eastern coast, east of the Sunken Shores named location and south of the Mega Maze landmark, with Cluster Coast further east. It is large enough to spot from the Battle Bus on most flight paths across the southern half of the island.

Is the chest confirmed to be a One Piece crossover?

Not by Epic Games. The company has named the next mini season Treasure Hunters, dated it November 1 and posted a teaser captioned with three straw hat emoji. It has not published the words One Piece. The crossover is widely expected rather than announced.
