Touchscreen MacBook Pro: Price, Specs and Release Date

Apple put a touch screen on the Mac. The PROLED XDR model starts at $2,899 and ships November 6.

The touchscreen MacBook Pro is real, it is called the MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display, and it starts at $2,899. Apple has spent a decade saying a touch screen belongs on an iPad rather than a Mac, and this is the machine that reverses that.

It comes in 14-inch and 16-inch sizes, runs M5 Pro or M5 Max silicon, and reaches stores on November 6. The screen, not the chip, is the reason it exists.

The First Mac With a Touch Screen

The touch sensor is built into the display panel itself rather than bonded on as a separate layer. That is what let Apple cut the 14-inch model to 3 pounds and the 16-inch to 4 pounds, each about half a pound lighter than the machine it replaces.

The panel is a tandem OLED panel rated at 2,000 nits peak for HDR and SDR alike, with a 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio. ProMotion now ranges from 10Hz to 120Hz, which matters for battery life as much as for smoothness.

The notch is gone, replaced by a Dynamic Island carried over from the iPhone. Colour coverage runs to P3 and Adobe RGB with more than 80 percent of Rec. 2020, and nano-texture glass stays a paid option.

Should You Buy the Touchscreen MacBook Pro?

The screen justifies the money for anyone grading video or retouching stills, because 2,000 nits of full-screen SDR and a 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio are not available on a laptop panel at any other price. Touch is the headline but the secondary benefit, since macOS was not designed around it.

The awkward part is the silicon. This machine ships on M5 Pro and M5 Max while the cheaper 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 runs the newer M6, so you are paying for the display and accepting a generation-old chip. Compared against a Windows workstation, our guide to the best laptops sets out what the same money buys elsewhere.

  • Buy it if: colour accuracy pays your bills, or you want the lightest 16-inch Pro Apple has made
  • Skip it if: you mainly want raw CPU, where the M6 machine is newer and cheaper
  • Wait if: you own an M4 Pro or M4 Max, which this does not clearly beat on compute
